Student Information
Requesting Classes:
The Distance Learning Program is customized to fit your needs. Approximately four months before instruction begins, a tentative list of classes to be broadcast in the upcoming quarter will be posted on this web site under Course Schedules. Meet with your site coordinator to review the tentative list and to confirm your course selections. Only those courses specifically requested will actually be webcast. The deadlines for requests are:
Fall Quarter: May 1
Winter Quarter: September 1
Spring Quarter: November 1
You will find the list of classes, the quarters they are offered, prerequisites, and a brief description of the class in the UC Davis General Catalog. This is the source from which you submit your preliminary request for classes.
Student Commitment: It is very important that you plan early and think very seriously about your commitment to the class you are requesting. Arranging a class to be webcast involves a number of people: the department, the instructor, the Registrar's Office, DLP staff and the camera operator. If the request is made after students have enrolled, all of them must be notified of the change in location. Sometimes, in order to accommodate a DLP student, the Distance Learning Program will request a time change for the class. If you later change your mind, these changes are all for nothing, especially if you are the only DLP student requesting it. This can impact the willingness of the stakeholders to be flexible in the future, for you and other students.
Registration Procedures
Continuing and Open Campus Students:
Continuing Students: All continuing students must go on-line to the Student Information System (SISWEB), in order to enroll in classes. Fee payment bills will be sent directly to you by the Registrar's Office. It is your responsibility to meet all deadlines to avoid late fees.
Open Campus: You should register through Kathy Zobel. Deadlines for turning in your application are September 1, December 1 and March 1 of each year. This gives us time to get you into the computer system so that you will have a computer account and have access to the webcast and the course web site by the time classes begin.
* Open Campus Courses: A UC Davis Extension Open Campus Program brochure can be obtained from this site: http://extension.ucdavis.edu/open_campus/. Read the brochure thoroughly as it contains information on all aspects of taking classes through the Open Campus Program.
* Enrollment Applications: Complete an Open Campus enrollment application for each class you wish to take. All DLP courses are available for Open Campus enrollment. All application information must be completed and you must also sign the application. You do not need to fill in the spaces provided for the instructor's signature, section numbers, departments, or special approval. The DLP office will complete this information when we receive your application.
* Payment of Fees: The amount you pay depends on the number of units you will be enrolled in (see Open Campus brochure). You may pay either by check, VISA, or MasterCard (note method of payment on application). We will submit your payment, along with the completed and signed application, to the Open Campus program office.
* Library Cards: You are entitled to a library card for the quarter in which you are enrolled as an open campus student. If you wish to have a card, please inform us when you submit your fees and we will then send you a library card application. Complete the application and bring it with you to the circulation desk on your first visit to Shields Library on the Davis campus.
* Enrollment Verification: The open campus program office will send a verification of enrollment and a copy of your receipt for payment directly to the address you listed on the application. If you do not hear from the open campus program office by the start of the fourth week of classes, please contact us and we will obtain the verification of enrollment for you.
* Late Enrollment: Please check the open enrollment application form for current dates.
* Withdrawal from Courses: Please check the open enrollment application form for current dates. Withdrawal forms should be completed and sent as soon as possible. If you do not complete work for a course and fail to file a withdrawal form, you will receive an F.

Homework:

Be sure you have a computer account so that you will have access to the class web site. Go to "Creating Your Computer Account" on this web site for information on how to do this. Sending homework to UC Davis is also scanned, faxed or sent via courier. Make a photocopy of any material sent through the courier.
Student Responsibilities:
The Distance Learning Program is happy to assist you in making your distance learning education a positive experience. We will try to do everything we can to implement course selections, streamline registration, assist with textbook purchases, and assist with obtaining faculty signatures on various forms. It is your responsibility, however, to know the deadlines, request the proper forms, and allow the DLP office sufficient lead-time to obtain the appropriate signatures. Plan ahead.
Whether you enroll as an Open Campus or a continuing student, if you wish to drop a class you must comply with the deadlines and requirements of the Distance Learning Program, the University Registrar's Office, and University Extension's Open Campus Office to avoid academic and financial penalties. The DLP office must be notified to stop the transmission charges that are assessed for each site that is receiving a DLP class. If you drop a class without notifying your site coordinator, you may receive an "F" on your transcript and be responsible for tuition charges and the cost of webcasting the class.
Kathy Zobel can provide you with information about deadlines and requirements, and assist you in completing the forms required to drop a class.
Assignments and take-home exams are due to your site coordinator by the stated due date unless previous arrangements have been made with the instructor.
Please consult your instructor regarding problems with deadlines due to your work responsibilities and travel conflicts.
Camera operators are instructed to follow the board work, not the instructor. Generally, the operator will remain on a particular section of the blackboard for approximately 10 seconds after the instructor has moved to the next board section to give the DLP students sufficient time to copy the information. If you need the operator to move more slowly or more quickly, please let the DLP staff know. Each classroom experience is unique and each instructor has a unique style; a style which works for one instructor and a particular course may not work for another.
Exams:
Most midterm and final examinations are taken at LLNL with a proctor. Occasionally an instructor will request that you come to the Davis campus to take an exam, or for a final project with an oral presentation.
